RPG-7, simple but effective
The RPG-7 is a portable, reusable, unguided, shoulder-launched, anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade launcher. The ruggedness, simplicity, low cost, and effectiveness of the RPG-7 has made it the most widely used anti-armor weapon in the world. Currently around 40 countries use the weapon, and it is manufactured in several variants by nine countries, including Egypt.
The RPG-7 was first delivered to the Soviet Army in 1961 and deployed at a squad level, replacing the RPG-2. Sighting is usually with an iron sight with optional optical sights, which will increase the accuracy. The RPG-7 can fire a variety of warheads for anti-armor (HEAT) or anti-personnel (HE) purposes.
The first combat use of the RPG-7 was by Egypt during the 1967 war, where they were not used that effectively. Only one was assigned per platoon, backed by RPG-43 grenades. During the 1973 war the RPG-7s along with AT-3 Sagger missiles where very effective, knocking out hundreds of tanks and APCs. During the 1973 war, the Egyptians and Syrians formed effective tank hunter teams and the RPG-7 was the main weapon of these teams.
